Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Public Relations Specialist Marketing Communication (SPRSMC) for the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT). This position reports to the Associate Director and Director of the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) and works independently with broadly defined objectives. The SPRSMC is responsible for creating and executing an integrated communications and technology transfer strategy with the purpose of effectively advancing the mission of CAIT and its programs, in particular the Regional University Transportation Center (UTC) Consortium Led by Rutgers CAIT. This position works closely with government relations staff also assigned to promoting the UTC program. Outcomes will include: Website, Newsletter, Email Update Notification, and UTC Listserv, Publications and Resources Distribution, External Media Placements, Advocacy Program, Subcommittee for Outreach and Marketing, Help develop and promote Training and Presentations and Technology Transfer Program, Detailed Communications and Outreach Plan, Internal and External Liaison and Clearinghouse.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Highlights and communicates the achievements of the center to sustain and improve its public image.
Utilizes public relations, social media and technology transfer tools to communicate the activities of the center and the UTC program's excellence and vitality, to both internal and external audiences.
Works in a team with stakeholders, consortium members, researchers and university relations to achieve objectives in CAIT advancement, within the context of the center's strategic plan.
Provides support, advice, and counsel to CAIT management on aspects of the Center’s overall strategic plan as well as all matters relating specifically to communications and technology transfer for the UTC program and other selected Center programs to advance the state-of-the-art in transportation research, technology development and implementation, and develops the next generation of transportation professionals.
Communicates the goals of UTC prescribed in the program workplan and acts as a two-way conduit for information on the progress and successes of the program to its various stakeholders: USDOT, FHWA, AASHTO, TRB representatives, State DOT personnel, industry, academia, and the public. And effectively markets the benefits (economic, safety, reliability, and quality of life) of the UTC Program at every level of government and to the general public. One goal of the communications, outreach, and technology transfer plan is to help build a network of experts, owners, and stakeholders that will aid in implementation of the program and to verify sustainability of UTC.
Focuses on activities associated with technology transfer and communications of the UTC Program maintaining relationships with stakeholders, consortium members, vendors, federal and state agencies, and their contractors to ensure ongoing communications and information sharing. This position plays a key role in the UTC organizational and strategic planning.
Conducts proactive outreach via national, regional, and local conferences, industry and technical magazines, newspapers and other external media, academic forums, and marketing materials produced specifically for the program. These efforts are aimed at the transportation community at Federal agencies, State Departments of Transportation (DOTs), legislators at all levels, universities, and the transportation industry, as well as the next generation of civil engineers currently in college and high school math and science programs.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communication, marketing, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge, skill, and understanding of writing, formatting, editing, proofreading, publishing, promotional advertising, organization coordination, and/or facilitation.
Also requires a minimum of five years relevant experience in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field, with a focus on strategic marketing/communications and use of coordinated campaigns using multiple mediums.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Exceptional ability in written and oral communications, including researching, writing, editing, proofreading, and presenting.
Excellent knowledge of marketing and communications field, demonstrated ability in media placement and publications production.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally and effectively with journalists, campus leaders, faculty, administrators and vendors.
Ability to manage, document, and organize multiple simultaneous projects is key. Must be able to think broadly and conceptually and formulate creative, sophisticated solutions to communication problems.
An ability to work autonomously in the prescribed duties, as well as cooperatively with the Center's faculty and staff, is tantamount to the success of this position.
Must be extremely detail oriented, dedicated, and self-motivated.
Excellent editing, writing, and project management skills are required.
While past experience in transportation public or private sectors and/or academic programs is desirable, individuals with similar qualifications in other industries are encouraged to apply.
Preferred experience using the Internet as a marketing tool as well as for disseminating information.
Ability to analyze/process and organize large quantities of complex information.
Familiarity with both AP and Chicago Manual editorial styles
Software skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.) and Adobe Acrobat required.
Proficiency in at least one layout program (InDesign, QuarkXpress, or Publisher) required.
Familiarity/working knowledge of graphic support applications (e.g., Photoshop, Dreamweaver) that is sufficient to provide direction to production personnel is beneficial
