POSITION SUMMARY Catlin Gabel seeks a Director of Marketing & Communications to join a dynamic and collaborative Enrollment Management team. This position oversees marketing, communications and brand management, and is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive marketing and communication strategy that strengthens the school’s brand by engaging audiences using multiple platforms. The director works closely with colleagues in admission, communications, advancement, IT, and the office of the head of school.
SCOPE OF WORK Reporting to the Director of Enrollment Management, the Director of Marketing & Communications will set and guide an integrated communications strategy to promote Catlin Gabel’s mission, achieve the schools’ strategic goals, build its community, and increase brand awareness. The director will ensure our communications reflect the school’s values and institutional priorities, and will work closely with senior administrators as the communications partner on a variety of strategic initiatives.
Direct an in-house creative team to develop, implement, and evaluate an integrated marketing communications strategy and annual calendar that serves the schools many audiences
Oversee media planning, budget, placement and creative execution; oversee strategy for digital marketing (including SEO and SEM) and publishing platforms, and online PR services
Supervise the Director of Publications & PR, Graphic Designer, Videographer and Alumni Engagement Associate Director
Coordinate the school’s marketing materials (print and digital) including message strategy, design, and copy including but not limited to:
o Advancement & alumni materials o Admission materials o Head of School communications o Academic division newsletters
Oversee and manage the strategy, design and content production for the school’s website; work closely with the director of technology to maintain quality and integrity of the website and train new users
With the Director of Publications and PR, collaboratively develop and maintain the school’s social media strategy
With alumni relations colleagues, create an engagement strategy that cultivates alumni allegiance, connections, and participation in advancement initiatives and the life of the school
Support the advancement team by consulting and assisting on appeals, philanthropy annual report, newsletters and social media campaigns
With the Director of Publications and PR manage media relations to generate press for the school, and communications for school closures and emergencies
Oversee an annual videography calendar and strategy; create stories with the school videographer for a variety of purposes including admission & advancement
Work with the Parent Faculty Association to promote parent events, update parents on school happenings and decisions, and ensure school calendars are current
Manage the communications budget
Manage crisis communications in partnership with senior administration
Serve on the Enrollment and Advancement Trustee committee
Bachelor’s degree required. Masters in communications, marketing, or related field preferred.
5-10 years of successful experience in leading marketing, brand management and/or communications strategy including extensive experience with website creation and management.
A strong track record of achieving marketing communications goals; thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently in a rapidly changing, stimulating environment.
Supervisory experience preferred; ability to motivate a team, create a supportive working environment, steer priorities and cultivate talent.
Excellent communication skills including writing/editing, verbal and design.
Demonstrated, excellent interpersonal skills and sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including employees, parents, board members, volunteers, donors, and students.
Self-starter, creative and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives.
Positive attitude, sense of humor and flexibility.
Understanding and appreciation of the mission of Catlin Gabel and the vision and values of a progressive independent school.
Advanced technical skills including Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, Survey tools, Vimeo, basic HTML, Constant Contact, and Google Analytics.
Catlin Gabel School is a coeducational, independent day school located on 54 acres in the West Hills neighborhood of Portland, Oregon formed in 1957 by the merger of the Catlin Hillside School, which had been founded as Miss Catlin’s School in 1911, and the Gabel Country Day School, whose roots extend to 1859 with the founding of The Portland Academy.
